Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Local craft exhibitions have emerged as vital tools for promoting community tourism by showcasing the cultural and artistic heritage of a region. In Argungu Local Government Area, Kebbi State, these exhibitions often feature traditional crafts such as pottery, weaving, and leatherwork, attracting both local and international visitors. The Argungu region, already renowned for its cultural festivals, uses craft exhibitions to complement its tourism initiatives, creating a platform for artisans to display their skills and generate income. According to Abdullahi and Musa (2024), local craft exhibitions not only preserve cultural heritage but also contribute to economic development by fostering tourism and entrepreneurship. Despite their potential, the effectiveness of these exhibitions in boosting community tourism often depends on factors such as organization, marketing, and stakeholder collaboration. This study evaluates the effectiveness of local craft exhibitions in boosting community tourism in Argungu, focusing on their impact, challenges, and opportunities.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While local craft exhibitions have the potential to enhance community tourism, their impact in Argungu is often limited by challenges such as inadequate funding, poor marketing, and lack of infrastructure. These issues hinder the ability of exhibitions to attract tourists and generate significant economic benefits. Although studies have examined the role of cultural events in tourism, limited research focuses specifically on the effectiveness of craft exhibitions in Argungu Local Government Area (Aliyu & Yusuf, 2023). This study addresses this gap by assessing the effectiveness of local craft exhibitions in boosting community tourism.

This study is significant as it highlights the role of local craft exhibitions in promoting community tourism, offering valuable insights for policymakers, tourism stakeholders, and artisans in Argungu. The findings contribute to academic literature on tourism development, emphasizing the importance of cultural and artistic heritage. Additionally, the study provides practical recommendations for improving the organization and impact of craft exhibitions, fostering economic growth and cultural preservation.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the effectiveness of local craft exhibitions in boosting community tourism in Argungu Local Government Area, Kebbi State. It excludes other tourism-related activities and focuses specifically on craft exhibitions. Limitations may include variations in exhibition formats and access to data on tourism impacts.
